In the opening match of the Premier League 2023/2024 season, Arsenal commenced their campaign on a positive note. The Gunners secured three points with a 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening (August 12, 2023).
Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 25th minute. Receiving a backheel pass from Gabriel Martinelli, Nketiah cleverly maneuvered past Nottingham Forest’s defenders and unleashed a shot that found the back of the net.
Bukayo Saka extended Arsenal’s lead in the 37th minute. Playing short passes on the right side of Arsenal’s attack, Bukayo Saka received the ball from William Saliba, dribbled inside the Nottingham Forest penalty box, and unleashed a powerful, curling shot that found the far post, leaving Matthew Turner with no chance to anticipate.
Despite being two goals ahead, Arsenal continued to press the Nottingham Forest defense throughout the remainder of the first half. However, the score remained 2-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes.
The Gunners continued their attacking momentum into the second half, with Martin Odegaard and his teammates making numerous efforts to further extend their lead.
However, Nottingham Forest refused to surrender. Under the guidance of Steve Cooper, the away team managed to fend off Arsenal’s pressure and looked for opportunities to counterattack.
Their efforts bore fruit in the 87th minute, as Taiwo Awoniyi scored a goal for Nottingham Forest. He capitalized on a sprinting run by Anthony Elanga from the defensive line into the Arsenal penalty box, ultimately finding the back of the net.
This goal revitalized Nottingham Forest’s spirits, as they pressed The Gunners during the remaining time. The seven minutes of added time provided Nottingham Forest with a chance to salvage a draw.
Yet, Arsenal held firm defensively while seeking opportunities for a counterattack. When the final whistle blew, the score remained 2-1 in favor of The Gunners.
