The 2023-2024 English Premier League may only kick off on Friday, August 11, 2023, or early Saturday morning, local time. However, before the new league season starts, the Community Shield match will be played.
The Community Shield traditionally pits the reigning English Premier League champions against the winners of the FA Cup. However, both competitions were won by Manchester City. According to the regulations, the replacement opponent for The Citizens is the runner-up of the 2022/2023 Premier League, which happens to be Arsenal.
City’s appearance in the Community Shield is due to their status as the FA Cup winners last season, where they secured victory over their city rivals, Manchester United.
The highly anticipated clash between Arsenal and Manchester City will take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, August 6, 2023.
The final of this year’s Community Shield is expected to be intense. Manchester City arrives with the momentum of winning the treble last season, clinching the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League titles.
On the other hand, Arsenal had a strong campaign in the 2022-2023 season, finishing at the top of the league for a significant part of the season, only to be overtaken by Manchester City in the final weeks of the Premier League.
Regarding Community Shield titles, Manchester United holds the record for the most trophies, with 21 titles to their name. Arsenal and Liverpool follow closely with 16 titles each, while Everton has 9, Tottenham Hotspur 7, Manchester City 6, and Chelsea 4.
However, Arsenal is showing positive signs as the most successful club in the past decade when it comes to lifting the Community Shield trophy. In the last ten years, The Gunners have won the shield four times out of four final appearances.
Their most recent triumph in the Community Shield was in 2020, when they defeated Liverpool in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.
This promising trend could put Manchester City at risk of suffering their third consecutive defeat in the Community Shield. The club has a poor record in the last two editions, having lost three out of the five Community Shield matches they’ve participated in over the past decade.
Their recent losses include matches against Leicester City, Liverpool, and a devastating 0-3 defeat to Arsenal in the 2014 edition. Manchester City last won the Community Shield in 2019 when they triumphed over Liverpool in a penalty shootout.
